Scuba diving in Halkidiki

Scuba Diving in Halkidiki | Top Dive Sites & Centers Guide

The crystal-clear waters of the North Aegean combined with a rugged underwater topography make Halkidiki one of the premier scuba diving destinations in Greece. With visibility regularly exceeding 20 meters and a complete absence of strong currents in its sheltered bays, the region offers optimal conditions for both introductory dives and advanced technical exploration.

The diving season runs from mid-April through October, aligning with the region’s extended tourism strategy to highlight alternative coastal activities.

Prime Diving Regions

Halkidiki’s three peninsulas offer distinct marine environments, from shallow sandy entries to deep wall drops.

1. Kassandra Peninsula

Known for its accessibility, Kassandra features excellent shore-diving spots and unique geophysics.

  • Mitilini Wreck: A 40-meter German cargo ship that sank in 1961. It lies completely intact at a depth of 20 meters, serving as an artificial reef for groupers, moray eels, and seasonal schools of tuna.

  • Loutra Thermal Springs: Located beneath the Agia Paraskevi spa hill. Divers can swim through unique underwater geysers where warm, sulfurous gas bubbles erupt directly from the sandy seafloor.

2. Sithonia Peninsula

Sithonia provides more dramatic underwater relief, characterized by steep walls and deep reefs.

  • Kelyfos Island (Turtle Island): Positioned in the gulf between Kassandra and Sithonia. This uninhabited marine sanctuary features shallow coral shelves (2–15 meters) rich in seahorses and octopuses, alongside vertical walls plunging past 60 meters for technical diving.

  • Kalogria Reef: One of Northern Greece’s top shore dives. The reef begins 100 meters from the Blue Flag beach, dropping from 4 meters down to 28 meters, showcasing dense Mediterranean marine life including amberjacks and sea anemones.

3. Ouranoupoli & Ammouliani Island

The region bordering Mount Athos provides isolated, pristine dive sites accessible via short boat trips.

  • Petalo Ledges: Located off the northwest of Ammouliani Island. Petalo 1 features shallow, pool-like conditions ideal for beginners, while Petalo 2 drops into three distinct petal-shaped rock formations where large snappers and groupers congregate.
