Hidden among the modern landscape of Nikiti, the Sofronios Basilica offers a fascinating glimpse into Halkidiki’s early Christian past. Dating back to the first half of the 5th century AD, it is one of the oldest early Christian basilicas discovered in Macedonia.
Although only parts of the original structure survive today, the remains reveal the importance of the area during the Byzantine period. The Sofronios Basilica was a large three-aisled church with a wooden roof and an impressive length of approximately 48 metres. During excavations, archaeologists discovered an inscription mentioning Sophronios, a bishop of the time. This discovery gave the monument its name.
As you walk through the archaeological site, you can imagine the role this church once played in the daily life of the local Christian community. The remains reveal a period when Christianity was spreading throughout the region and shaping the identity of ancient settlements.
