1. Ancient Inspiration and a Perfect Terroir
The selection of this specific location in the foothills of Megali Panagia followed exhaustive, targeted research across Northern Greece. Founders discovered a microclimate that perfectly matched their high viticultural standards. Furthermore, building a modern winery here connects directly to ancient heritage. The estate stands remarkably close to the birthplace of “Akanthos”, a legendary wine praised in antiquity and closely tied to the history of nearby Ancient Stagira. Consequently, owners chose the name Akrathos to honor this ancient legacy.
The initial 5 hectares of land were acquired in 2008. Soon after, workers prepared the rugged site and planted the first vines between 2010 and 2014. The high altitude of 600 meters protects the crop from intense summer heat. Instead, low night temperatures and cool winds from the surrounding mountains combine with sea breezes from the bays of Ierissos and Mount Athos. This unique climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly, locking in intense aromatics and crisp, balanced acidity.
2. Organic Cultivation and the Wine Portfolio
From the very first day, the viticulture team applied strict organic farming and low-impact methods. This careful approach preserves the delicate ecological integrity of the mountain forest and protects the unique topography of the individual plots. Construction of the state-of-the-art winery building began in 2014, allowing for precise, gravity-fed processing of the estate’s harvest.
The vineyard team continuously cultivates the vines to develop deep, strong root systems. As these young vines mature over time, the yields and overall grape quality improve significantly with each passing vintage. The estate focuses primarily on showcasing the magnificent potential of indigenous Greek grapes, including the crisp Assyrtiko, the highly aromatic Malagousia, the bold Xinomavro, and Limnio—the oldest recorded grape variety in Greece.
