Geroplatanos is a small, picture-perfect mountain village in central Halkidiki. It sits right at the base of Mount Holomontas, surrounded by deep green woods and quiet fields. Together with its neighbor, Paleochori, it forms a historic pair of villages known locally as the Zervochoria.
The village proudly preserves its classic Macedonian architecture. As you walk through the narrow stone alleys, you will see traditional homes and neat gardens that show off the authentic lifestyle of the Greek countryside.
The village gets its very name from its most famous feature: a magnificent, long-lived plane tree (Gero-platanos means “Old Plane Tree”).
A Giant Scale: This massive tree stands right in the center of the village square, towering more than 20 meters high.
Thick Trunk: The trunk is so wide that its perimeter measures over 15 meters around.
Protected Status: Because of its incredible age and size, the tree was officially declared a protected Monument of Nature in 1976.
The Heart of the Town: The giant branches cast a massive blanket of cool shade over the entire square, making it the perfect spot for locals and travelers to sit and talk.
Just outside the main streets lies the village’s most beautiful religious and natural site.
A Wooded Sanctuary: The small chapel of Panagia (Our Lady) sits nestled inside a thick, beautiful forest filled with wild walnut trees and plane trees.
Peaceful Atmosphere: The area around the chapel is incredibly quiet and green, offering a cool escape where you can listen to natural mountain springs and birds.
Cultural Life: The local cultural club uses the village’s beautiful settings to organize traditional gatherings, art events, and festivals throughout the year to keep local history alive.
